MTTZ is based in Lusaka, Zambia’s capitol, so we are completely impartial about why we think everyone should choose Zambia as their African destination. Zambia is our home. We know it best!
Zambia offers visitors first class wildlife; fewer visitors to deter from that once-in-a-lifetime safari experience; some of the best guiding on the continent; night and walking safaris; and accommodations which are intimate, stylish, and models of low impact tourism. There is no better value than Zambia for an affordable African wildlife safari. Happily, we see more and more people choosing Zambia for their first-ever safaris.
While Zambia’s tourist industry has been dominated by fly in and out safaris to its national parks, Zambia is a great country to travel by road. For some itineraries, flying remains the best choice, but if you have the time and want to see more destinations within Zambia and outside of the national parks, then hire a MTTZ safari vehicle. Both the northern and southern sectors of Kafue National Park are best seen in their entirety on a circular route that can begin in Lusaka and end in Livingstone or vice versa. The off the beaten path gems in Zambia’s north – Mutinondo Wilderness; the Shiwa N’gandu Private Estate; Lake Tanganyika & Kalambo Falls – are best accessed by road.
Another popular driving route is South Luangwa National Park, Luambe National Park, and North Luangwa National Park, returning to Lusaka via the Great North Road. You can fly in and out of the increasingly popular Liuwa Plains National Park in Western Zambia or you can undertake a bigger adventure and drive via Kafue National Park, returning via the Upper Zambezi River and Livingstone. Lower Zambezi National Park and Siavonga/Lake Kariba are within driving distance from Lusaka. The bat migration in Kasanka National Park in October/November, one of Zambia’s greatest wildlife spectacles, is half a day’s drive from Lusaka. Allow MTTZ to drive you to any of these Zambian highlights. MTT always has an experienced Zambian driver/guide behind the wheel who is your conduit to Zambia for the duration of your stay.
Zambia has some amazing traditional festivals but because their dates are unreliable international visitors have difficulty incorporating them into their Zambia planning. There are several exceptions of festivals which we can work into Zambian itineraries. Eastern Zambia’s Kulamba Festival of the Chewa people is held the last weekend in August and is a good cultural event to combine with a visit to South Luangwa National Park. The Ncwala of the Ngoni people, also in Eastern Zambia, is held at the end of February.
There are several lodges in South Luangwa which offer green season safaris in February. Northwest Zambia’s Likumbi Lya Mize traditional ceremony of the Luvale people, known for its famous Makishi dancers, is held the last week of August. It can be combined with a visit to Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage for chimpanzees; Mwinilunga, one of Zambia’s best birding and off the beaten path destinations; and Northern Kafue National Park.
MTT road safaris are always guided by an experienced Zambian driver/guide. If self-driving is more your thing, then we can work with our Lusaka-based associate and arrange your vehicle and itinerary for you.
Combine Zambia with Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park via the border town of Chirundu, or Hwange National Park via the border at Livingstone/Victoria Falls. Combine Zambia with Botswana’s Chobe National Park and beyond via the border town of Kasane. Combine Zambia with Namibia via the border town of Katima Mulilo and the Caprivi Strip to Etosha National Park. Combine Zambia with Malawi and Lake Malawi via the border town of Chipata.
As well as first class wildlife, Zambia has hidden places to explore and people to meet if only you have a sturdy, comfortable vehicle to reach them. It is why MTTZ provides the opportunity to see Zambia by road in a 4 x 4 Land Cruiser. There are also practical reasons for choosing MTTZ. It works freely with a diverse collection of accommodation owners and associates, which best serves each client’s unique needs.
MTT is a small company, the advantage of which is quick decision-making ability, room for lots of flexibility, and personalized service. Broad experience and knowledge of more than one African country makes MTT a qualified consultant for anyone seeking to combine Zambia with other countries.
Zambia’s tradition is family-run accommodations, friendly, stylish, intimately sized and models of low impact tourism. In national parks, small remote bush camps often serve as satellites to a main lodge. They are rebuilt every year using all natural materials. Showers are open to the stars; healthy meals shared communally, usually al fresco. Visitors begin at the “mother” lodges from which they make their way to the bush camps. The main lodges offer game drives in vehicles. The bush camps provide opportunities to walk, although many of them also offer vehicle support as well. There is a diverse range of accommodation, something for everyone, in Livingstone, location of Victoria Falls.
The final cost of a safari depends upon many factors: length of the safari; accommodation choice; seasonal rates for accommodation; safari vehicle rental; fuel; driver and guide expenses; local flights; airport transfers; and park, community and activity fees.
Operators which offer set departures and itineraries which don’t alter greatly throughout the year can provide safaris already priced on their websites. MTT’s specialty is bespoke safari services. Each itinerary is personal and its cost varies. However, the guideline for a good value, mid-range safari in Zambia is 475 – 900 USD per person per day.
